After various tests here and there, I have not found any combination that you can satisfy me like the old style gnome 2 ... now I try to survive with this combination.
Distro= Archlinux x86_64 (Gnome 3 desktop)
Gtk3 theme Plastiq: [link]
Shell theme Gs-metalx: [link]
Icon theme Pry-Etched-Black
File manager: Marlin (this replace nautilus elementary project)
Wallpaper Placid-w.
Everything else is awn lucido, conky, screenlets and covergloobus-bzr.

This may sound stupid, but if you liked the old look-and-feel of G2, why do you use G3 at all? LXDE or XFCE might fit better.
Or you might even use a standalone WM and add the good old gnome-panel und stuff ;-)

I collect all kinds of linux for more than five years and I've tried everything you suggested ... Of course I did not say that I do not like gnome indeed love it. What I do not like is several small aspects such as nautilus 3 for exemple I find it horrible!

I've tried gnome3 just for a few hours out of curiosity, so I ain't sure bout the updates on nautilus - I just usually hear people whining about the shell and the new panel, so this was my first reflex :D

I like the design though, nice and simple. And an exquisite icon theme.

Try KDE if you like Gnome 2. The plastic fantastic glow etc. are easy to disable.

I have KDE on another disk and use it every day. But gnome is irreplaceable.

Why? I've been using Gnome almost my whole Linux-period, but when I fixed my maincomputer the other day, I tried out KDE and I'm loving it, but it needs a lot of tweaking though, and without QtCurve GTK-applications will look bad, but hey, there's always a fix :D My current KDE-desktop [link] .

I've tried KDE long time ago, but I never grew familiar with it...nowadays I ain't into those overweight DE's. LXDE(+compiz) ftw! :D
And since we're showing off, snapshot here: [link]

I can't say for sure since I haven't tried KDE until now, but I think a lot has changed in the last updates.
If you download the base, and remove a lot of the default effects then it's not really that heavy. Runs smoothly and stable.

It definately has, since I last used it long before the last major update to KDE4 :D

But I love the highly modular and lightweight concept of LXDE, so I stopped experimenting around on this.

Never tried LXDE, maybe in the future :)
I wanted something that could said to be very customizable but still good for everyday use, and then I got recommended KDE, and I think that's a very good choice for my needs :)

I'd say that LXDE is much more customizable than KDE...I don't remember it to be that easy to change the panel or the window managaer as it is in LXDE. And in the end, it's gtk ;)

Nop, running standard atm, just customized theme/style etc. everywhere. Thought about maybe testing QtCurve after a while, but atm I'm happy with the current setup. Only thing I could possibly want would be to remove icons from rightclick menus and other minor things like that.
